This amp came from the Sound Practises mail list- the Joelist. One of the members revived a method of choke loading the driver with the DC B+ taken from the cathode of the output tube.A few other members jumped in with suggestions, refinements, other configurations and we had "Monkeys, Half Monkeys, Chokeless Monkeys " and more.
The simplicity of the circuit is very appealing as there is minimal parts with this design- this suggests good sound so I grabbed my 6SN7-5687-50 SE amp and witin a couple of hours it was a 6SN7-5687-6B4G Monkey.
The 6B4G is of course a 2A3 with 6.3V filaments. The 6SN7 was capacitor coupled to the 5687 as I needed the gain to match my other amps in the active system.
This amp sounds much better than I thought it would! It is very "clear" and very lifelike- it is perfect as the midrange driver in my active system as vocals sound so realistic.
I've got some chokes somewhere that I could use as grid chokes on the 5687 that would probably be another improvement.
I got about 3 watts out of it which was pretty good as I was restricted to the amount of B+ I could apply to the 5687.
A great amp!
Here's another one of my cruddy circuit diagrams- usual excuse-no time for fanciful programmed drawings.
