I just made a pair of these Stonehenge III cabinets for a pair of 604-8G's and am not impressed with bass response at all. The Highs are good and the mids are okay too. The cabinet material is 18mm plywood and has the longititudal and cross braces fitted. The Vent size and length is correct to drawing also. The speakers themselves were reconed in the last two years and never used again until I got them. They came complete with their original crossovers. I have the cabinets standing on the ground (without the small pedestal underneath). I have the one inch of fibreglass tacked inside and the speaker sealed to the front panel. I have calculated the inside volume to be 6.1 cu ft. which I thought should have been okay. I am now planning to make the 620 cabinets but make the port horizontal and put the crossover underneath on the front panel. The speakers are powered by monobloc 300b, 5692 and GZ37 tubes, Piltron TX's, and ASC caps. These are stunning.
I have been using a pair of Visaton Experience 25's which I made in 1996 but wanted something better.
I was trying to include an image for reference but was unable to find how other than a link to another web file which does not exist yet.
Any comments or advice would be greatly and appreciatively received.

  When I Emailed Jim Easely a few months agoregarding his plans, he said the Stonehenge lll wasn't the best box for a 604 and mentioned the lightweight bass as well.

The Bass response is not extending down into the range I would have expected. It is like they are stifeled or restricted in their movement. These speakers seem to require relatively high volume to get the lows to come out. I ran them facing each other with one out of phase for 48 hours covered with several quilts and they did seem to loosen up a little (downwards). Would these normally require a "running in" period after re-coning? Would perhaps 3 or 4 adjustable spikes on the base of the cabinet help my situation? I am using multistrand normal electrical with push on spade connectors crimped on between the Attenuator and the speaker. Is the wire type critical here? (There is probably discussions on this subject elsehere on this board) I have been moving them around the room and find the best response is when they are tight against a wall.
If I do make a pair of 620's will I get lower lows than I have now? 6 cu ft vs 9 cu ft. Just in the process of doing the drawings for these and will post them here for review when done if there is no objections.
Any advice gratefully accepted.

  Hi Bill, long time, no see. I have to agree with you on this, I've got 604-8g's in Altec factory 620's and also a loose pair of 604E's and from my limited experiments I found the bass is better in something over 9 cu ft but below 12 cu ft. After 12 they get a bit boomy. The 620 cabinets are the best compromise for good low end and integration with the horn. However, I still think my new / old 19's are better.

  I prefer the 604-8G in a larger cabinet (9ft3) with a wide baffle – basically the 620 – particularly for reasons of bass performance. To my ears, they go deeper and have stronger upper bass/lower mid performance, balancing out the hot midrange to some extent. I thought this was more ‘G’ specific but I heard the same improvement with a 604E when changed from a 7ft3 box to a 620 knock-off cabinet.
The Stonehenge may look prettier than the 620 but it is possible to work with the 620 design ideas and come up with something that doesn’t bother your wife too much. Here’s what I did using the 620 as inspiration.

  The Stonehenge III is a very attractive speaker. The lows are less than ideal however I believe the use of a separate sub would be a better answer. The 604's just don't have the extreme low end even in the 620 cabinets. They sound better in the 620's but to my ear it just isn't there. What the 604's do they do very well. The image produced by the 604's is very very good.

제가 요즘 생각하는 오디오의 화두는 '양'과 '질'..
저음이 기대만큼 나오지 않는다고 하면 양적인 문제인지 질적인 문제인지요..?

  줄자로 잿기 때문에 2-3미리 오차는 있을 수 있습니다.
통의 깊이는 37.5cm(바깥쪽)이고 18mm 칲보드로 되있습니다.
용적은 그리 크지 않으나 저역이 약간 부족하다는 느낌외에는 정확히 평가하지 못했습니다. 앰프땜시.

일단 예전에 가지고 있었던 8H와 비교한다면 .... 이것은 완전 제 취향입니다.
8H는 유명한 김..님 통에 들어있었는데 유닛이 그런지 통이 그런지 무신 이런소리가 다있다냐....할만큼 쏘았습니다. 근데 요놈은 무슨 알텍이 이래?? 할정도로 쏘지는 않더군요. 탄노이를 가지고 계신 주변 애호가분 왈." 뭔 소리가 이렇게 부드럽소"  저도 의아합니다.
단 한가지 고역이 조금 부족한듯한 느낌이어서 수퍼트위터를 달까 고민중입니다. 앰프탓일 수도있고 스피커 탓일 수도 있는데 얼마전 김종수님이 완성한 인클로저 위에 트위터가 자리잡고 있더군요. 제가 알텍을 많이 들어 봤으면 판단이 쉬울텐데 들어본게 몇개않되서.... 그것도 몇년전에.....
일단 가정용으로 설계된것은 확실한것 같습니다. 통과 유닛의 위치 밸런스가 좀 안맞지 않나 생각했었는데 소파에 앉아서 몸을 조금 뒤로 제끼면 유닛의 위치와 귀의 위치가 일치되더군요.

제가 물려본 앰프가 출력이 작은 6BM8 싱글이어서  아직 정확한 판단을 내리 수는 없겠지만 저로서는 일단 만족입니다.

  For best results the depth of the enclosure should be no less than 1/3 the width, and height and width no less than twice the diameter of the loudspeaker.

이 기준에 따른다면, Stonehenge의 가로(Width)는 너무 좁은 셈이로군요.
